ARTIST PRACTICE

Why the nude?

John Berger wrote that “to be naked is to be oneself”, while the nude is something seen, framed and interpreted by others.

The nude sits at the centre of art history, but it is also deeply political and deeply human. I’m interested in what happens when we try to strip it of some of those inherited expectations of gender, beauty, sexuality and the social body.

For me, drawing the nude is a way of searching for a more neutral encounter with the body, one based on gesture, weight, vulnerability and presence. In removing some of the usual markers through which we read a person, I’m interested in whether we can see the body, and perhaps ourselves, with greater clarity.

Why line?

In a world filled with overstimulation, perfectionism and complexity, I am drawn back to something that feels instinctive, raw and unrefined.

The economy of line brings a sense of calm, but it also leaves space for interpretation. I am interested in forms that are not fully prescribed or immediately recognisable, so the viewer is able to bring their own experience to what they see.

For me, the line is not about describing everything. It is about suggesting enough for the figure to exist, while leaving room for uncertainty, projection and a more personal reading of the body.

Where did the work begin?

The work began in 2017, when I started making simple line drawings of figures and selling them directly from my studio. I was looking for a visual language that felt instinctive and entirely my own.

Those early works were later sold through Liberty in London, and from there the practice grew into paintings, site specific works and commercial collaborations, with drawing remaining at its core.
